We offer birding and nature summer programs in Maine for adults, teens, and families.

Since 1936, the Audubon Camp in Maine has offered environmental education programs for adults, teens, families and conservation leaders on Hog Island in Muscongus Bay, Maine.

June 5 to 10: Joy of Birding

June 12 to 17: Field Ornithology/Coastal Maine Bird Studies for Teens

June 19 to 24: Hands-on Bird Science/Coastal Maine Bird Studies for Teens

July 10 to 15: Arts and Birding/Raptor Rapture

July 17 to 22: Sharing Nature: An Educator’s Week

August 7 to 12: Family Camp (ages 8-12 years old)

August 14 to 19: Family Camp (ages 8-13 years old)

September 4 to 9: Maine Seabird Biology and Conservation / Living on the Wind: Fall Migration & Monhegan Island (day trip only)

September 11 to 16: Living on the Wind: Fall Migration & Monhegan Island (overnight on Monhegan)

 

2016 Hog Island Program Descriptions and Directors

1. Maine Seabird Biology and Conservation (I - Spring) - An overview of topics concerning seabird biology and applied conservation with opportunities for hands-on service for seabirds. Program Director: Steve Kress

2. Breaking into Birding - An introduction to birding for those with a beginning interest in bird identification. Program Director: John Pumilio

3. Joy of Birding – For those with birding basics, looking to learn, experience, and appreciate more about bird song and behavior. Program Directors: John Pumilio

4. Field Ornithology - For more experienced bird enthusiasts who are eager to learn about topics in ornithology such as taxonomy, evolution, and migration. Program Director: Sara Morris

5. Coastal Maine Bird Studies for Teens - For teens 14-17 years with a keen interest in birds. Noted ornithologists and birders  lead sessions on field identification, bird song, and conservation practices. Program Director: Scott Weidensaul

6. Hands-on Bird Science - For those interested in learning methods for bird study including banding, telemetry, census methods, and GIS mapping. Program Director: Scott Weidensaul

7. Arts and Birding - For those with an interest in advancing their skills in bird photography, sketching, and journaling. Program Director: Jean Mackay

8. Raptor Rapture - Watch the famed Hog Island ospreys up close, try your hand at raptor photography, hone your identification skills, and learn more about the critical role of birds of prey in the environment. Program Director: Rob Bierregaard

9. Sharing Nature: An Educator’s Week - Learn inspiring and practical environmental activities to incorporate into your teaching while exploring coastal habitats with expert naturalists. Program Director: Pete Salmansohn

10. Family Camp (Session One) - Awaken each day to explore the intertidal zone, hike through spruce fir forests, and experience island life with enthusiastic naturalists! Wind down the day with evening activities including songs around the campfire. Crafted for families with children 8 to 12 years of age. Program Directors: Craig Newberger and Trudy Phillips

11. Family Camp (Session Two) - Awaken each day to explore the intertidal zone, hike through spruce fir forests, and experience island life with enthusiastic naturalists! Wind down the day with evening activities including songs around the campfire. Crafted for families with children 8 to 13 years of age. Program Directors: Ron Smith

12. Maine Seabird Biology and Conservation (II - Fall) - An overview of topics concerning seabird biology and applied conservation with opportunities for hands-on service for seabirds. Program Director: Steve Kress

13. Living on the Wind: Fall Migration & Monhegan Island (day-trip to Monhegan only) - During peak fall migration, bird in coastal habitats and overnight at Monhegan Island, one of the best migrant traps in the Northeast. Program Director: Scott Weidensaul

14. Living on the Wind: Fall Migration & Monhegan Island (overnight on Monhegan) - During peak fall migration, bird in coastal habitats and overnight at Monhegan Island, one of the best migrant traps in the Northeast. Program Director: Scott Weidensaul

Please note that for these programs, there are NO prerequisites, and less experienced/enthusiastic spouses/friends are more than welcome to enroll in the sessions!
